SUBJECT: April 2021

Greetings Leopards!

What an interesting, exciting year!

I am reminded today as I log off of a meeting with the LISD PTO Presidents and Dr. Womack, that as LISD prepares for the future, we are all "One Heart, One Lovejoy."  Our LISD School Board has spent countless hours trying to navigate our budget crisis.  Please take a moment to show your support and gratitude for their continued efforts.

Your LES PTO Executive Board remains so very positive and encouraged about the future of LISD elementary school PTOs.  LISD Council of PTOs has graciously guaranteed a position for every one of our incoming LES board members, as well as those incoming members of HES and PES boards, should the LISD School Board decide to repurpose our Lovejoy Elementary School next year.

So... we are gearing up for our LES PTO April 12th General Member Meeting via Zoom (information found below in this newsletter) and hope to see you there!   At this meeting we will nominate our LES PTO 2021-2022 Executive Board officers and vote in our 2020-2021 Financial Reconciliation Committee.  We have decided to delay reviewing our 2021-2022 budget given the changing landscape of our elementary schools next year.  We will be calling a special General Member Meeting on May 3rd (information TBD) to address procedures and votes needed in reaction to the LISD School Board's April 19th decision regarding elementary school restructuring next year.

In the meantime, your LES PTO is still here and cranking away!  Thank you to everyone who volunteered to help classroom teachers make copies and complete projects.  Our author visit is now official as well.  We welcome author Bruce Hale to LES.  Mr. Hale has written and/or illustrated over 40 books for young readers.  You can read further in this newsletter about his upcoming presentations on April 30th.

Also, be on the look out for more information about Teacher Appreciation Week May 3rd - 7th!  We cannot wait to serve our wonderful LES staff.  This year in particular, we voted to further support our LES staff by reallocating funds to our hospitality budget for Teacher Appreciation Week.  Be on the look-out for sign-ups listing how you can help later this April.

Have a blessed, encouraging spring and please reach out if you have any questions, concerns, or needs!

Outstanding Service Awards

Lovejoy Elementary PTO is awarding Kristen Dawson the Outstanding Service Award.  Mrs. Dawson has been the librarian at Lovejoy Elementary for 14 years and her passions for children’s literature and young readers shines bright.  You can find her searching for books that will spark a love for reading.  She loves to learn students’ interests and match books to those interests.  Mrs. Dawson also works hard to give the students valuable lessons and countless resources in the library.  She is kind, generous, loving and an invaluable resource to LES!

Lovejoy Elementary PTO is awarding J.B. Nicholson the Outstanding Service Award.  Coach Nicholson has been the P.E. Coach at Lovejoy Elementary for 8 years and wears many hats in the district.  He can frequently be seen driving between campuses to coach varsity baseball and 7th grade football.  His kind, gentle personality and friendly nature encourages his students and athletes to do their best!  Coach is a special leader in our district and does such a great job of reaching so many in our district.

PTO Scholarship Application Available

The Parent-Teacher Organizations in the Lovejoy Independent School District each will award one $500 scholarship to a college-bound senior graduating from Lovejoy High School in 2021. This centralized application means that each student completes the form ONCE, but is eligible for PTO scholarships through the Lovejoy schools they attended (plus the Lovejoy Council and Preschool PTO).

All student applicants (a) must have attended LHS during their sophomore, junior, and senior years; (b) belong to the LHS Parent-Teacher-Student Organization; (c) complete the online scholarship application, including the essays; (d) upload a resume; and (e) have one letters of recommendation submitted.

To begin the application process, students must complete a brief survey, located online at 2020-21 Scholarship INTENT TO APPLY. This survey, which requests their name and email address, indicates their intent to apply.

Once the above Intent to Apply survey is received, we will send the student a link to the online scholarship application. This link will allow students exit and return to the application in case they cannot complete it in one sitting.

THE APPLICATION DEADLINE IS MIDNIGHT FRIDAY APRIL 23, 2021

Please email Shannon Verschage at LJCouncilScholarship@gmail.com if you have any questions regarding this application.

Author Bruce Hale is Coming to LES!

We are going to have author Bruce Hale coming April 30th to do two virtual presentations with the kids! The first will be for K-2nd and the other will be for 3rd-4th.

Author Bruce Hale’s presentations are a blend of character education, stand-up comedy, and pro-literacy message. His lively assembly includes an audiovisual presentation about his journey from reluctant reader to author, a storytelling from one of his books, a question-and-answer session with students, and a brief cartooning lesson. Kids come away inspired, eager to write and illustrate their own books.

April is Autism Awareness Month

Autism Spectrum Disorder now affects 1 in 54 children in the United States.

Autism, or autism spectrum disorder (ASD), refers to a broad range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication. We know that there is not one autism but many subtypes, most influenced by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Because autism is a spectrum disorder, each person with autism has a distinct set of strengths and challenges. The ways in which people with autism learn, think and problem-solve can range from highly skilled to severely challenged. Some people with ASD may require significant support in their daily lives, while others may need less support and, in some cases, live entirely independently.

Let's celebrate the unique talents and skills of persons with autism around the world.

***Staff Birthdays***

We want to wish these staff members a SPECIAL "Happy Birthday!"

Please help celebrate these wonderful educators!  Thank you for making a difference in our children’s lives!
